Fire & Hammer

A message of hope and a view of life through the eyes of a Christian American black.

Name: Dennis
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

For the past 17 years I have been a husband, and for 9 years, a father. These roles are second in importance only to my role of follower of Jesus Christ. My day job is in scientific research where I study the chemical senses (smell and taste). While I enjoy my job, I am in the process of making a career change: following my boyhood dream of writing. As an American, I am concerned about the direction my country has chosen on some issues. Politically I fall right of center (conservative), but I am not a right winger. I believe the most important character trait for any person is personal integrity.

"1984" Election Ads and Uninformed Voters

By now most of you have probably heard about and even seen the YouTube video placing Sen. Hillary Clinton in the old Apple/Big Brother Super Bowl ad. Now there is a new version with Sen. Barack Obama up on the big screen. During an interview for NY1, Sen. Clinton spoke of the good this ad will do in bringing more interest into politics. I agree this may bring more interest but doubt this interest will translate into more voters actually voting. What this video brings to light is the need for voters to do more work in order to become informed voters.

At this point no one has claimed responsibility for the original ad. The internet allows for a great deal of anonymity, which can be good but can also lead to a lot of abuse and deception. Future elections might be decided based on information from an industrious twelve year old or by a spurned lover with an ax to grind. Who knows, perhaps one statement by a blogger sitting in the Philadelphia area could change the course of an election.

In this country we have the right to be uninformed voters, basing our vote on anything we choose. But if we want our country to be the best it can be we need to become informed voters. It is time for the citizens of the United States to take an active grass roots roll in becoming informed voters and in helping our neighbors so they also can become informed voters.

Update 3/22/07: The creator of the original add featuring Sen. Clinton has been revealed. Hat Tip Michelle Malkin.
