Fire & Hammer

A message of hope and a view of life through the eyes of a Christian American black.

For the past 16 years I have been a husband, and for 9 years, a father. These roles are second in importance only to my role of follower of Jesus Christ. My day job is in scientific research where I study the chemical senses (smell and taste). While I enjoy my job, I am in the process of making a career change: following my boyhood dream of writing. As an American, I am concerned about the direction my country has chosen on some issues. Politically I fall right of center (conservative), but I am not a right winger. I believe the most important character trait for any person is personal integrity.

Ted Haggard Slips

It seems the top story of today is about Rev. Ted Haggard and charges by a gay male prostitute of sex and sharing drugs. Haggard admits to buying Meth and receiving a message but denies having sex. This has made the news because of Haggard's former position as head of the National Association of Evangelicals, which he resigned following the revelations.

In the past, when members of various groups did something wrong I encouraged the group to denounce the person's actions. I will follow my own suggestion today. Ted Haggard did something wrong. He has admitted to sinning against God and there is no justifying his actions.

What does this mean for the Christian faith? Absolutely nothing.
For true followers of Jesus the faith is based on Who God is what He says and what He has done. The faith does not change because of the indiscretion of a man. God has not and will not change.

Is Haggard's teaching wrong?
I do not know Haggard (never heard of him until today) and do not know what he taught. If his teaching lines up with the Bible then the teaching is true because the Bible is true. The truth does not changed just because the messenger messed up. If you want to know the truth, go read the Bible.

The unfortunate thing is Haggard probably knew the truth but chose the flesh. Now his church, and most of all his family, will have to deal with the repercussions of his actions. The Christian response is to condemn the action but not the man.

La Shawn Barber comments on Haggard, reminding us that all have sinned. She speaks of God's forgiveness and how Christians should pray for Haggard and head God's warning in Galatians 6:1 less we also slip and fall.

Well said brother, well said!

There will be those outside of Christ's grace, that will attempt to slander the religious. They will soon learn a little concept called, absolutes. God is and always will be absolute. No Man's actions or words will ever change that.

If you want to know the truth, go read the Bible.

Amen!
