Fire & Hammer

A message of hope and a view of life through the eyes of a Christian American black.

Name: Dennis
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

For the past 16 years I have been a husband, and for 9 years, a father. These roles are second in importance only to my role of follower of Jesus Christ. My day job is in scientific research where I study the chemical senses (smell and taste). While I enjoy my job, I am in the process of making a career change: following my boyhood dream of writing. As an American, I am concerned about the direction my country has chosen on some issues. Politically I fall right of center (conservative), but I am not a right winger. I believe the most important character trait for any person is personal integrity.

Alaskan Patriots Reject Citgo Oil

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's promise of cheap heating oil was rejected by a few villages in Alaska. (See the AP report in the Chicago Sun-Times.) The people of the Aleutian Pribilof Islands normally pay very high prices to heat their homes. While Alaska is a large oil producer, these citizens live in an area where the only way to deliver oil is by barge. Often the barge is late leading to oil rationing and high prices. With their main source of income (salmon fishing) struggling to compete with fish farms, they are struggling to make ends meet.

Cheap heating oil would truly help them, but they have said no. They are not willing to support someone who calls their president the devil. They are patriots who see this as their country lead by their president. They are offended by an outsider calling their president names and are not willing to compromise, even if it means they will struggle to heat their homes.

It is refreshing to see people of principle taking a stand and making a sacrifice for what they believe. I encourage the people of the United States to stand with our fellow patriots. Jeannette over at Hang Right Politics posts donation information. For more information on the people of the Aleutian Pribilof Islands check their web page which includes their official statement concerning the Citgo offer.

The government is trying to help with an increase in support by way of LIHEAP but I hope we all are willing to help our fellow citizens in their time of need. Send donations to:

Independent Conservative linked with "Some Alaskans Say Principle is Worth More Than Oil!" In this post IC reminds us that there are other areas being offered Citgo oil. There is a call to offer a charitable alternative to them as well. Now is the time to show Chavez and the world how we take care of our own and can do so without government handouts.
