Fire & Hammer

A message of hope and a view of life through the eyes of a Christian American black.

Name: Dennis
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

For the past 16 years I have been a husband, and for 9 years, a father. These roles are second in importance only to my role of follower of Jesus Christ. My day job is in scientific research where I study the chemical senses (smell and taste). While I enjoy my job, I am in the process of making a career change: following my boyhood dream of writing. As an American, I am concerned about the direction my country has chosen on some issues. Politically I fall right of center (conservative), but I am not a right winger. I believe the most important character trait for any person is personal integrity.

A Question of Faith

Over the last couple of days I have seen a question asked, the basis of which is would you stand up for what you believe at gun point. Lately this has been asked with regards to the kidnapping and subsequent release of Fox News reporter Steve Centanni and photographer Olaf Wiig. The two were forced to accept Islam at gunpoint before they were released. This is not the first story of people being forced by violence to convert and each time it happens I hear or read people wondering what they would do if they were told to convert or lose their life.

Independent Conservative says he will stand on his faith, and prays he will "be as firm in less comfortable surroundings" than those he enjoys here in the United States. He also mentions the example he would set for his family and the expectation of God.

La Shawn Barber also answers the question, saying the answer would be a simple but not easy choice. She goes on to point out how in the U.S. we do not face life and death decisions about our faith, but we do face challenges. So it is easy for us to say we will not deny God, even at gunpoint.

Of course I am also answering from the comforts of the United States. But I can say with confidence my answer, even at gunpoint, would be to acknowledge my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the Father Who sent Him. How can I be so bold? I do not trust in myself but in the Spirit of God Who dwells in me.

See, there is no part of the Christian life that I can live on my own, even when I am not at gunpoint. I must daily humble myself and surrender to my Lord. This includes trusting Him to supply all my needs, even if that need is the courage to stare down the barrel of a gun.

To succeed the follower of Jesus must spend time building trust and faith in the only true God. Each of us must allow God to work in us to build our faith so that we can face any trials that come our way.

I trust the Lord to give me the words to say and to also give me a change of pants.

Mark 13:11
"But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost." (Words of Jesus; KJV)

I fear we are not teaching verses like this one today and in some cases people will need this kind of encouragement.

A very thought provoking and insightful article on faith brother.

I have been thinking about this since reading Independant Conservatives blog and must say that it would be tough, but I too would stand up and proclaim the lord as my savior.

I cant help but think of that fine example we had in Columbine when asked if she believed in God, staring at a barrel of a gun, and she said yes, only to meet him moments later.

Thank you. I will be mentioning the young lady from Columbine in another post. She revealed a level of faith that should be lifted up as an example to all believers.
