Fire & Hammer

A message of hope and a view of life through the eyes of a Christian American black.

For the past 16 years I have been a husband, and for 9 years, a father. These roles are second in importance only to my role of follower of Jesus Christ. My day job is in scientific research where I study the chemical senses (smell and taste). While I enjoy my job, I am in the process of making a career change: following my boyhood dream of writing. As an American, I am concerned about the direction my country has chosen on some issues. Politically I fall right of center (conservative), but I am not a right winger. I believe the most important character trait for any person is personal integrity.

Interesting Reading: August 14, 2006

Update 8/15/06: Darnell from IC passed along a link to a post called "Black Denial."

The last few weeks have been very busy with the baby, surgery on the dog, and family coming to visit. I have had a lot of fun but the summer is going by way too fast. With the month of August half over, I thought it was time for a list of interesting posts.

Let's start with LaShawn Barber's Corner where we find a post that I admit I am still digesting. "A Secret History of the Democratic Party" examines the racism which was once part of the party's history. While the Republican Party has long been painted as the party of racists, it is the Democrats who stood for segregation.

Independent Conservative gives a good reason to buy Coke and avoid Pepsi. While you are there, do not miss the post on Bill Cosby who is trying to get the truth out about his comments on the black community. Face it, we have a problem in the black community and it ain't Bill Cosby. Let's not shoot the messenger. If you don't like the message, do something about it.

La Shawn's post about the history of the Demos is a good one. The best collective summary of the racist roots of Democrats in my opinion is the letter Rev. Wayne Perryman sent to former DNC chairman Terry McAuliffe before the DNC Convention. There is still a copy of that online at: http://www.blackconservative.net/BlackDenial.html

I'm not saying that racism is immune from either party. They both have their share, but if we want to get into which party has more racist baggage it's the Democrats without question. It's laughable that the old Republican "Southern Startegy" is even mentioned in light of the actions of the Democrats. Especially given their wiretapping and other secret actions done to MLK that they never talk about. Whenever they talk about MLK being abused they say it was done by "the government" but they never say that the government was run by Democrats then. And unlike Republicans, none of their party chairman or Presidents have apologized for the actions of their party.

i learned about this in college.

from what i understood, the democratic party used to be the conservative christian party and the republican was the opposite.
