Wag The Dog Part II
In my previous post (Wag The Dog) I asked if the current immigration debate is distracting us from seeing how our government has no real solutions. This is not to down play the importance of the threat posed by our porous southern border. As Darnell points out in his comment the movement of illegal immigrants across our borders and the issue of terrorists plotting against our country are closely linked. Darnell left a link to a post at Independent Conservative which gives the facts.
As the post points out, we only catch 25-33% of illegal aliens crossing our borders. Terrorists could and are blending in with these 'undocumented workers' knowing that the odds of being caught are low. Yet the issue of terrorist crossings seems to be mostly background noise behind the issue of undocumented workers. The debate has been framed around the economic impact of 11 million criminals who want us to continue ignoring our own laws.
We already have laws on the books to deal with immigration. Congress is poised to pass more laws which I suspect will become nothing more than feathers in their caps for use in elections. In the end we will still have 11 million or more criminals who will be granted what amounts to a pardon based upon sweat equity. We will still have a flood of 'undocumented aliens' who will tunnel under the new fences and with the help of the Mexican government find new ways to enter. And terrorists will learn from their example and still enter our country.
We should secure our borders. I just fear the dog has been wagged and in 2008 when the new spin starts for the presidential elections, we will have missed the fact that our government spent a lot of money but added no real security.

1 Comments:
to call them criminals is a bit much.
we all do stuff that is illegal, its just a matter of what we have done.
they are people looking for a better life. they are the ones cleaning our hotels and mowing our lawns. they have kids and are trying.
our process of letting people in and out should be streamlined. a fence is incredibly stupid. kicking people out is stupid.
