Fire & Hammer

A message of hope and a view of life through the eyes of a Christian American black.

Name: Dennis
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

For the past 16 years I have been a husband, and for 9 years, a father. These roles are second in importance only to my role of follower of Jesus Christ. My day job is in scientific research where I study the chemical senses (smell and taste). While I enjoy my job, I am in the process of making a career change: following my boyhood dream of writing. As an American, I am concerned about the direction my country has chosen on some issues. Politically I fall right of center (conservative), but I am not a right winger. I believe the most important character trait for any person is personal integrity.

Prayer for Haleigh Poutre

Michelle Malkin has a write up on Haleigh Poutre. I encourage you to read the story both on her blog and on The Political Pit Bull.

Haleigh is on life support after being abused allegedly by her adoptive mother and stepfather. The state of Massachusetts now has custody and has won the right to remove life support based upon the certification of doctors of her being "in a persistent vegetative state with no hope of recovery."

After winning court approval the state reported Haleigh is in fact showing signs of recovery. I give DSS credit for recognizing her improving state. However, imagine what would have happened had the courts given permission a few days or weeks earlier.

Is this another Terri Schiavo case? The answer is no. Haleigh is a minor, who legally cannot speak for herself, and even if she could, there is no indication she has shared her wishes with anyone.

For now, let us pray for Haleigh as she fights for her life. Let us also remember, a human life is not a political trophy waiting for a winner. These types of matters involve a person and as such we should lean to the side of caution.
