The Bible Says
How many times have you heard the famous quote, "God helps those who help themselves?" A financial consultant once used this quote in order to make me feel guilty for not hiring her. Thank God for the do not call list.
Is this quote in the Bible? While the Bible does advocate personal responsibility, the quote is not in the Bible, and the very concept runs counter to the idea of Christ saving those who could not save themselves.
Here is another question. How many of each type of animal was Noah instructed to take with him on the ark? If you answered two of each kind, I suggest you read Genesis 6 and 7. Don't stop at verse 19 of chapter 6, as chapter 7 verse 2 is important to the answer.
We must read the Bible for ourselves and know what it says as opposed to what we want it to say.

I get upset when people try to use the Bible to back their social welfare programs by saying Jesus wants us to care for the poor.
While it's true Jesus does want us to care for the less fortunate, I believe we are called to do it through our own personal sacrifice. I always tell liberals, anyone can vote to give away tax dollars. That is not being generous. True generousity comes when you sacrifice your own personal income for the Lord's work.
Then they try to use the Bible to justify the acceptance of homosexual activity by saying Jesus loves us all and even He hung out with the lowlife of society. They twist and warp the Bible to meet their own personal agendas.
Mike, I believe what you describe stems from a fundamental misunderstanding (by liberals and others) of what the Bible really is and from the spiritual war in which we all take part. The Bible above all is a description of Who God is and as such does not support any agenda other then the Gospel agenda. The enemy wants us to twist and turn the Bible according to our own purpose until it serves no purpose at all. That is why true followers of Christ must stand and be willing to teach what the Bible really says.
